Acute Leukemia

     Acute leukemia qualifies for Social Security disability benefits for 2 1/2 years from the time of initial diagnosis.

 

Chronic Leukemia

     Chronic leukemia qualifies for Social Security disability benefits if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • Chronic anemia with a hematocrit of 30 percent or less requiring one or more blood transfusions on a average of at least once every 2 months, or
     
  • Chronic anemia resulting in damage to another organ-evaluate that organ under the rules for that organ, or
     
  • Chronic thrombocytopenia with platelet counts repeatedly below 40,000/cubic millimeter with at least one spontaneous hemorrhage requiring transfusion within five months prior to adjudication, or
     
  • Chronic thrombocytopenia with platelet counts repeatedly below 40,000/cubic millimeter with intracranial bleeding within 12 months prior to adjudication, or
     
  • Myelofibrosis (myeloproliferative syndrome) with documented recurrent systemic bacterial infections occurring at least 3 times during the 5 months prior to adjudication, or
     
  • Requiring bone marrow transplantation. Consider under a disability for 12 months following transplantation; thereafter, evaluate according to the primary characteristics of the residual impairment
